The Warhammer Age of Sigmar Christmas boxes 2023 have been announced, but are they any good and what is the best value?
For starters, we’re not sure what the exact value of the Age of Sigmar Christmas boxes of 2023 are because Games Workshop hasn’t announced the price of the boxes yet, but we can look at relative values. What is the savings that you get from each box?
Well, there are four boxes announced this year: Seraphon, Ossiarch Bonereapers, Slaves to Darkness, and Soulblight Gravelords. And the surprising thing (to me, at least) is the amount of variation in savings in these boxes. We’re going to make one assumption: that the Age of Sigmar Christmas boxes for 2023 will cost $210, which is what they cost last year. Of course, inflation and all that will possibly change things, but again: we’re looking at relative value.
Primordial Starhost
This Christmas box from the Seraphon isn’t an amazing value when it comes to the 2023 Christmas boxes (though if you’re looking for these specific models it’s still a substantial savings.) I’m actually a big fan of this box as you get a lot of the new releases from the Seraphon, and there isn’t much in the way of filler. The way the prices break down, if you were to purchase all of these models individually from Games Workshop, is this:
Slann Starmaster $85
10 Saurus Warriors $60
3 Kroxigor $60
3 Aggradon Lancers $60
Hunters of Huanchi $60
Total: $325, or 154% total value.
Praetorian Spearhead
The Ossiarch Bonereapers are far and away the best value of the Age of Sigmar Christmas boxes, but I have to say that they are also my least favorite. The models are fine, I guess, but there’s nothing in this box that is particularly new, and, more importantly, nothing that really screams “Buy Me!” Still, I’m not an Ossiarch Bonereaper player and if I were then I would probably have different opinions. If you were going to buy the Praetorian Spearhead separately:
Arch-Kavalos Zandtos $60
5 Kavalos Deathriders $60
20 Mortek Guard $60
Gothizzar Harvester $60
4 Morghast Archai $140
Total: $380, or a 180% value.
Warhorde of Eternus
This is the box that is most enticing to me out of all of the Age of Sigmar Christmas boxes of 2023, and I don’t even play Slaves to Darkness. The models in this box are some of my favorites and, while not the newest, they’re certainly not old. I’m not a Chaos guy, but if I were, I would be a Slaves to Darkness guy. However, this box has the smallest percentage of savings of all the boxes.
Eternus, Blade of the First Prince $60
3 Ogroid Theridons $65
5 Chaos Knights $65
5 Chaos Chosen $60
10 Chaos Warriors $60
Total: $310, or a 147% value
Vengorian Court
This is also a box that I’m interested in, but prolly not one that I’d pull the trigger on. I’ve painted a lot of skeletons in my life and I’m not eager to paint more (even though the Deathrattle Skeletons look great). I also really love the Blood Knights and have been meaning to pick some up forever. And Lauka Vai is a model that a lot of people don’t like but that I actually quite like. Not the best value, but not the worst.
5 Blood Knights $70
20 Deathrattle Skeletons $60
10 Dire Wolves $60
3 Fell Bats $60
Vengorian Lord (or Lauka Vai) $70
Total: 320, or a 152% value
