Getting started in Age of Sigmar can seem daunting. There are no fewer than 24 factions, each with their own lore and (hopefully) Battletomes. But the world is bigger than just 24 factions and their background, because Age of Sigmar is the successor to Warhammer Fantasy, the game that lasted 30 years, built up its own lore, and then was literally blown up. The few survivors–mostly gods–found their way to the Mortal Realms, eight planes of existence based on the 8 Winds of Magic.

So there’s a lot to digest about Age of Sigmar. But there are big perks when it comes to the game, too. It’s a far easier game to learn than Warhammer Fantasy was (Warhammer Fantasy was nuked primarily because it was so bloated), and it’s generally considered to be an easier game to learn than Warhammer 40k. Which is not to say it’s not fun, competitive, and challenging! It is all those things and more.

Plus, Age of Sigmar has done some really inventive and interesting things with its new incarnations of races from The World That Was. What was once a world of mostly Tolkien-esque generic races is now full of complexity and wonder, with more magic and weirdness, more bizarre settings and simply larger in scope. Now, it’s not improbably to see an army of elves riding eels and giant turtles through the open air to battle against an army that is not simply undead but uses the bones of other creatures to build their armor, war machines, and mounts. And that’s to say nothing of the steampunk dwarves, the literal angels reincarnated, the demons delighting in pus and contagion, and… the free people who somehow eek out an existence in this turbulent and war-filled universe.

There is so much to get started with Age of Sigmar on the hobby side, too, with models that are as varied as they are fantastical. Each offers different challenges to the builders and painters, from the smooth blends on the Nighthaunt to the crisp metallic lines on the Kharadron Overlords to the limitless number of color combinations for the Stormcast Eternals.
