It has been a LONG time since I posted a Hobby Streak article, but that doesn’t mean that the Hobby Streak hasn’t been going strong. I have been painting busily, a little bit of this and a little bit of that. And with this article I hope to catch up with what I’ve been working on (I’ll miss some) but also tease some reviews that will coming up soon.
Enderain
For starters, I have a copy of the indie wargame Enderain, which comes out of Britain and is miniatures agnostic. It is sci-fi, however, and I was looking through all of my sci-fi figures and not really finding what I wanted to use for my forces.
The first place I turned was a box of unpainted Warhammer Kill Team Traitor Guard. They had been on my shelf for a long time and I’d never really had a purpose for them. I painted them up (fairly slapdash, if I’m being honest, as I wanted to get to reviewing Enderain as soon as possible). I’m pretty happy with the results.
But I needed someone else for them to fight, and my son loves Star Wars Legion, so I figured it was time to dive deep into Star Wars Legion to find another sci-fi force, and I chose the Rebels and the Rebel Auxiliary. I used the slapchop method on these guys, and got all ten of them painted up in an afternoon. I like them quite a bit.
And then, just because I was already working on it, I churned through a batch of Clone Troopers. Enderain has NPCs that you fight, and they even recommend using Star Wars Legion Stormtroopers for them, so it was a good fit. (Enderain also has bots in the game, so of course I needed the droids, but I let me son paint those.)
Leagues of Votann
The next game I’m not exactly reviewing but need to talk about is that I have almost got an entire Leagues of Votann army completed. I still need Berserks and the Hekaton Land Fortress, but everything else is in my possession. I like some of these better than others–I love the standard Hearthguard and I love Grimnyr. I especially love the little Sagitaur, which is smaller than it looks in pictures. The one model I have no interest in is Brokhyr Iron-Master. I don’t know why, but I really don’t like the look of any of it.
But I’ll be reviewing the full army list soon.
Battletech
Yes, it’s time that I get around to reviewing Battletech. I have been aware of Battletech for as long as I’ve been aware of Warhammer, but other than the occasional video game I have never played. Well, that is all changing.
I will admit to two things: first, I LOVE how crunchy it is. I loved how crunchy Adeptus Titanicus was and this goes circles around that. Second, I do not, and I have never, liked the look of Battletech Mechs. I think they’re dumb. I don’t think they’re fun to paint and I don’t think they’re creatively interesting. And, while I admit to just now getting into Battletech, it looks like they haven’t done a single range refresh of the mechs in the 30+ years I’ve been familiar with the game. Bleh.
Slaves to Darkness
I NEVER thought that I would like a Slaves to Darkness army. I don’t like Chaos in Age of Sigmar generally–I don’t like demons much–and while I can get into Chaos Space Marines, Chaos Age of Sigmar is just blah.
But, this new look of the Slaves to Darkness has completely sucked me in, and I knew that I had to paint the Daemon Prince and the Ogroids. I’ve still got one Ogroid to go, but I enjoyed the five Chaos Warriors.
Two things: I like that Slaves to Darkness do not have the mind-numbing amount of trim that Warhammer 40k Chaos armies do. And second, Targor Rageshade is my new favorite armor shade. Obviously it’s not for ALL kinds of armor, but it works so well on the tarnished Chaos armor.
Nighthaunt
This is far from a new army or range, so there’s not much to review, but 2023 is coming up and I keep promising that I’m going to complete a 2000 point Age of Sigmar army. I think that Nighthaunt is the one for me. New year new army. I’ve painted a ton of it before and always sold it–I’ve painted and sold two Black Coaches–but this time I think I’m in for keeps.
Blood Red Skies
Finally, the last game that I’m reviewing I don’t have pictures of because it is currently in the other room on the dining room table. Blood Red Skies will be the next game reviewed on the channel, and while I realize that this is not exactly a timely review–the game is a couple years old–I’m liking it so far. It’s got air combat vibes similar to X-Wing (which I loved in 1st Edition) and Aeronautica Imperialis (which I raved about). So, that review should be coming out soon.
