2022 Hobby Goals: The Ovelist
I have been wanting to post my 2022 Hobby Goals and had kind of an amorphous list of them floating around in my head, but this morning one of my favorite YouTubers, Arbitor Ian, described something called The Ovelist. The Ovelist is a pictorial list of all of your goals for the year, started by Andy Ovel, a co-host of the Hobby Support Group podcast. The list, as described by Andy is “at the end of the year you draw up a grid of pictures. I normally get 12 squares with a project in each square, and if you have a big project you can break it up into different squares. And you post it on social media and it keeps me on track with my hobbying through the year.”
According to Andy, his primary goal is to work on things in his cupboard of shame or his pile of opportunity, but that new projects can be included to.
So with this in mind, this is the Ovelist that I have created. It’s not everything that I am going to do this year, but it is the main thrust of what I’m going to do this year.
So without further ado, this is my Ovelist. I encourage you to create your own Ovelists over on Instagram and show what your 2022 hobby goals are.
2022 Hobby Goals: The Ovelist
2022 Hobby Goals, Broken Down
#1. Build Two Forces of the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game So I Can Play With My Son
My son (12yo) has really caught the painting bug and for Christmas he asked for Thorin’s Company, which he has already painted up. I have dabbled in the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game a little here and there, but mostly collecting models and very rarely playing. This year I would like to collect two forces big enough that I can play some battles with my son (and hopefully get a few in at the local game store as well).
#2. Build a New 2000 Point, Game-Legal Space Marine Army
I have built three large Space Marine armies in the last year, but none of them were 2000 full points and none of them were game legal. Some were heavily kitbashed, others focused only on character models. Very few had Heavy Support or Fast Attack–they were just a lot of varieties of Space Marines. I want to build a complete Space Marine army, start to finish, that is completely game legal, and I want to play games with it at my local game store.
#3. Build a New 2000 Point, Game-Legal Age of Sigmar Army
I have honestly no idea which faction I’m going to be going after here, but I have a of Age of Sigmar armies that are extensive (Nighthaunt, Stormcast Eternals, Kruleboyz) but none of which are completely playable. Now, I have no plans of playing in tournaments–competitive play is not why I’m in this hobby–but I do want to have an army that is game-legal and completely playable. Nighthaunt is definitely the closest I have to that, but I’m also REALLY leaning toward a Stormcast Eternals all-dragon army.
#4. 5 Indie Game Reviews
Over the course of the next year I want to be able to get into at least 5 indie games (such as Silver Bayonet or Sludge) to the extent that I can play them and review them competently. This will be a lot of work, but it’s something I love, and I want to do it.
#5. SQUATS
If the rumors are to be believed, and so far the rumors have been right on the money, then we will see Squats return in some form in 2022. My current guess is that they won’t be a complete range but likely a Kill Team. Either way, I am a squat lover from way back in 1st Edition when I bought my first squads and trikes. I am 100% on board with buying whatever the crap they put out in the way of Squats, be it Squat Kill Teams, Squat auxiliaries, Squat armies and codices–whatever. Squats will beat me up and take my money, and I will let them have it all.
#6. Napoleonics
Now, I know me, and I know that I don’t have the time and patience to create a full Napoleonic force. But what I would like to do is to create a minor Napoleonic force. Not both sides this time, just a good old-fashioned historical army. These may very well be the new Warlord Games Black Powder Epic Scale Waterloo minis. I would be all over that. I’m not going to blow $830 on their massive starter pack, but I could see myself getting several brigades and building up a sizable force.
#7. Release a Rule Set
I have been playing around with creating an indie ruleset that miniatures agnostic but which takes place during World War II (though with the addition of lots of non-historical elements). I want it to be a game that the casual gamer who has a collection of Bolt Action and any blend of SFF wargames, be they Age of Sigmar, Kings of War, Warhammer 40k, or something kitbashed from scratch. Similar to Konflikt 47, but different enough to make it something new and interesting (but some Konflikt 47 miniatures will still work!)
#8. Star Wars Legion
No one in my area plays Star Wars Legion, so I want to be the hobby advocate at my local game store and start getting people into the hobby. This is a project where I will be digging down into my personal Pile of Shame and digging up some half-painted rebel troopers and some Hoth snow stormtroopers to make a Hoth battle game. I’d like to get an AT-ST in there, and some other Hoth-like stuff.
#9. Turnip 28
This is a game that has been on my radar for quite some time but which I have finally decided it’s time to pull the trigger on. I admit I haven’t read the rules yet, so I’m honestly not even sure if this is a skirmish game or a full battle game, meaning I don’t know whether I’ll be fielding an entire Turnip 28 army or just kitbashing a few models. Still, looking forward to it.
#10. Batman Miniatures Game
The cost of this game is the one thing that is keeping me away from it, and the cost mainly seems to derive from there being no USA retailer who stocks it–shipping prices are ridiculous. I need to look into it more because I hear great things about it, and the sculpts are incredible. It looks to be everything that I wanted Marvel Crisis Protocol to be, only with a big step up in quality.
#11. Malifaux
This is another Pile of Shame. I have two of the core sets, and I want to dig into the game because it sounds like it could be an absolute blast. I’ve read the rules (because they’re free) and I love the playing card based system. The models are great, though very tiny and hard to put together. But I definitely have my eye on Malifaux.
#12. Continue the Hobby Streak.
I have been extremely pleased by my ability to complete so much of the hobby streak (currently on Day 234), and it has done wonders for my confidence and skill.
So those are my 2022 Hobby Goals, my 2022 Ovelist. I’ll be posting this to Instagram, and I encourage you to post yours.
