I may not be posting every day, but I am painting every day. And my current project is my Tallarn Genestealer Cults/Imperial Guard army, which you can read about here. The basic premise is that the world of Tallarn has been infiltrated by Genestealers, and the cult is thriving all through the ranks, infecting many in the Imperial Guard. Standard stuff.
But that’s not enough! It has always seemed to me that if Genestealer Cults were from the underhive of civilization, then shouldn’t they be shoo-ins for Necromunda? I certainly think so, which is why I decided that the Necromunda Squats needed to join the Genestealer Cult. (There wasn’t any conversion here, just that they’re all painted in the same color scheme.)
But now it has progressed.
First, the Genestealers have added to their numbers with the Atalan Jackals, one of my favorite kits. I think that these motorcycles are among the best vehicles in the entire Warhammer 40k universe, if for no other reason than they look like they’d actually be useful. (And lest you think that no one can fire a shotgun one-handed while riding a motorcycle, Arnold Schwarzenegger would like to have a word.)
So I painted them all and they look really good (well, good for me). But then I went to the FLGS hoping to find something else to add to my Genestealers and was instead very quickly tempted into buying the Attilan Rough Riders and the Lord Solar.
The Attilan Rough Riders were an absolute joy to paint. In fact, both of these sets were. The Attilan Rough Riders take me back to 1st Edition when I actually had honest-to-goodness ancient cavalry. The color scheme stayed the same: a lot of oranges, tans, reds and greens. But I got to paint the horses themselves however I wanted. And, fortunately for me, very little of the horses were visible, so I didn’t have to make them particularly believable. (I’ve never gotten the hang of painting horses.)
Speaking of not having the hang of painting horses, let’s look at Lord Solar. His horse is red. But, my reasoning is that he’s obviously a bionic horse, as evidenced by the wheels at the joints in his legs, so why can’t he just be a fully Adeptus Mechanicus bionic horse. Sure, he’s a little more horse-like than the Serberys Raiders, but not much. So there’s no reason why he can’t be red.
And I have to say that this model is frigging gorgeous to me. It’s one that I extremely proud of. Certainly not a Golden Demon winner, but it was a joy to paint and I think it looks particularly good.
But I wasn’t done there. I needed some more Necromunda, and I wanted more vehicles, so the obvious choice was the Cargo-8 Ridgehauler, a vehicle which is far too cool to be relegated to a sideline game like Necromunda. It needs to be on 40k tabletops. I have no idea what rules I’m going to come up with to integrate it into the Genestealer Cult army, but even if it just looks good in an Armies On Parade-like setting, I’ll be happy.
And then, I got a little carried away and may have bought House Cawdor, because they just look exactly like Genestealer Cults anyway. They’re not painted yet, but I’ll be sure to show them when they are.
