So, this is a #hobbystreak article, but as you can see I have finally named my homebrew Space Marine chapter. They are The Inferno, and they are a successor chapter to the Salamanders. I’ve made some design choices with them that I’ll go into in more depth as we move on, but for now I’m still playing with their backstory and worldbuilding.
For now, know that The Inferno is a an elite chapter of the Space Marines with extremely long lifespans, making virtually all of them veterans, and the true veterans–the Bladeguard Veterans, for example, are especially prestigious. All of them were originally Firstborn Marines who crossed the Rubicon Primaris, so they all have their origin in the pre-Primaris past.
Due to travels and constant wars–they are engaged in a decades long conflict the the Xenos–they have not returned to their homeworld or even been resupplied much at all. They are hardy, they are resourceful, and they very seldom die.
The first model that I painted this week was the model that finally clinched it for me, that made me decide that they would officially be successors of the Salamanders. And that’s Adrax Agatone, who is now a captain in The Inferno, Captain Hesperus.
You’ll notice in him, and in the Incursors who are coming up, that I made the creative choice to take the Salamanders’ volcanic-black skin and simply give them brown skin. And I decided that I wanted the entire chapter to come from the same stock, so they are all brown-skinned.
There isn’t much special about this captain of The Inferno except that he is a very old Space Marine who has seen an awful lot of action, and that he wears the skin of one of the beasts that the Salamanders were named for.
Next up are the Incursors. I love Incursors and have previously written how I think that they are not simply one of the best units of the Space Marines, but one of the best units in all of Warhammer 40k. There was no doubt that I was going to take Incursors in my army of The Inferno. I haven’t fully written out what my complete army list is going to be, but I think it’s fair to say that we’ll see more Incursors.

I also needed some Heavy Intercessors, not for any reason other than that they’re a new unit and I’ve never owned Heavy Intercessors before. So I wanted to have some. I like them okay. They’re nothing special. I know they’re tough and hard to kill, but the Primaris still lack a true Terminator equivalent (yes, I know about the Aggressors and Inceptors, but they don’t really fill that slot.)

Finally, I painted some Assault Intercessors. Over the course of this project, you may notice (looking back at the beginning of The Inferno) that the models are getting more and more yellow and orange and less red. I think this is for the best, and I like the volcanic, magmatic glow that it gives them.

Next week I’ll have more of The Inferno to show off, and hopefully I’ll have more of their backstory.
