There was still a little bit of faffing about this week, though I did achieve one of my favorite paint jobs ever (and one that I really, truly hate). For those who don’t know what #hobbystreak is, here’s a primer, and if you want to see what happened last week in my #hobbystreak you can click here. But on the the paints!
Hobby Streak Day One: A Song of Ice and Fire Dothraki
This was last Sunday and I had a lot of time to devote to painting. I got four more Dothraki complete, which I really enjoy–they turn out so well even with minimum effort and ample use of contrast paint. I also painted Daenarys. Overall I definitely consider this day a big success. Lots of neat things were painted and I’m happy with how they turned out.

Day Two: Deathwatch Ultramarine
On day two of Hobby Streak I cracked open a box of models that has been kicking around the office for the last several years: Kill Team Cassius, which, I believe, was one of the initial starter kill teams for the Deathwatch (I admit I don’t know the lore behind Kill Team Cassius, other than every one of their members is from one of the loyalist Space Marine Chapters, so each has a very unique flavor.) You would think this would give them a little more visual interest, but restricting them to black and silver armor with their only signifiers a few badges and pauldrons here and there kind of defeats it. I still like him. I think he could definitely use a gloss varnish–all of the Deathwatch I painted this week could use gloss on their armor, and I intend to buy some.

Day Three: Deathwatch Salamander
There was a chance for a little more color and variation on this guy, with the reptilian (amphibian?) loin cloth and banner. He also is very into flames and flamers which are good fun to paint. Also, I haven’t painted a Terminator since before the Primaris were released and I have to admit that I really enjoyed picking one up again. Still needs a gloss varnish though.
Day Four: Deathwatch Blood Angel
I’m a Blood Angel collector from way back so I was happy to dip my toe into the Blood Angel waters again, even if that was just to paint a few red blood drops and a few gold wings. I think that both of the jump pack Space Marines in this box (you’ll see the Raven Guard one in a minute) are done really well, and it makes me yearn for a day when flyers and jumpers had interesting bases that they were mounted on rather than the clear plastic rods that hold them up now (which I really hate). Not the best paint job–I am three Deathwatch in and not getting any better at black armor–but still pretty happy.
Day Five: Dankhold Troggoth
To say that I painted this guy in one day’s worth of #hobbystreak would be disingenuous. He’s a very detailed model and I’d been working on him for several days here and there. But I have to say that the finished product is really one of my favorite models that I have ever painted of, seriously, all time. Everything about him just works. I made strategic use of zenithal highlights and Contrast paints on his skin, and then a lot of detail work all over him. I have no complaints and he’ll get a place of honor on my shelf.

Day Six: Deathwatch Imperial Fists and Raven Guard
I started this day painting a different model (which we’ll see in a minute) but I got so incredibly frustrated with that one that I put it away and went back to the Deathwatch, cranking through two more. Neither of these are anything special, and I really wish I could go out today and buy that gloss varnish (my wife is having a medical procedure next week and our entire family is under COVID lockdown until that happens, so no visits to the game store). Again, however, I like the Raven Guard in his jump pack jumping off a hunk of concrete instead of a clear shaft.
Day Seven: Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares
She really is the mother of nightmares—my nightmares. As great as this model looks on the box, I hated it from start to finish. Not only was it finicky to get my brush in amongst the wings but I don’t think I chose a good color, I don’t think I executed it well, and I just don’t think that it is anywhere close to my best work. In fact, within an hour of finishing her I had her posted on eBay because I don’t want to look at her anymore.

That’s it for me this week. What did you paint for #hobbystreak?
