With the new year I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about The Wargame Explorer and the direction I want to move with it. And something has been rattling around in my brain for the past couple of months.
In November, Hank Green posted a YouTube video in which he said the following:
“I feel like ultimately there’s like two kinds of content getting made on the internet. There’s like haters and there’s fans. And making hater content works well and is easy. It’s pretty easy to make people mad about stuff. Making stuff that gets people positive emotions and is accurate is more work and takes more time, but you build a much stronger and stable foundation.”
And that really struck me. Because there IS a lot of hater content on the internet in the wargaming community–I don’t need to link you to channels that do that because you’ve all seen them before–but there are also communities that are positive and accurate. And that’s what I want to be a part of.
I won’t claim that every article IN THE PAST on this website has been positive, but I can say that going forward, everything that I post in the future WILL BE positive.
Now, does that mean that I’m not going to be honest? Will I not review a bad game and say it’s a bad game? Of course I’ll be honest, because one of Hank Green’s points was to be accurate in addition to be being positive. But there will be some nuance defining what actually is a “bad” game and what is just a game that has problems.
But will this website be one that purposefully trashes games? That bandies in conspiracies and debates and click-baity headlines that promise gleeful ranting? Nope.
The Wargame Explorer will be a site that is pro-fan. If you are a wargaming fan, then this is where you can find a home. If you want to talk about what you love about the games, then I’m here for you. If you want in-depth articles that cite statistics and facts, then that’s what we’ll be–all in the pursuit of fun and enjoyment.
I’m reminded of an interview I did early into the life of the website, with Eric from Eric’s Hobby Workshop. At the time, it was a regular question for me to ask what about the hobby made the interviewee optimistic and what made them pessimistic. We had the following exchange:
“6. What makes you most pessimistic about the future of the hobby?
Eric: Nothing, good vibes only my dude.”
That’s what we’re going to get here. Good vibes. Postivity. Accuracy.
I hope you join me for the journey.
