It’s been a while since I updated you on my Hobby Streak, but rest assured that I’ve been painting (you can always keep tabs on it on my Instagram). I’m in a bit of a patchwork of painting lately because, after finishing the Stormsword a couple weeks ago and the world being…the way it is lately…I’ve felt less like painting tanks and Death Korps of Krieg. I’m looking for things that remind me less of real war and more of fantasy.
(As an important sidenote that’s very related, I’m currently auctioning off three of my favorite recent models as a fundraiser for the Save the Children Ukraine Fund.)
Lord Kroak
One of the models that is being auctioned off is Lord Kroak, a model I picked up a while ago and have been waiting for the right time to paint. I admit that I honestly get mixed vibes from the Seraphon as to whether or not they’re the “good guys” (there are more real good guys in Age of Sigmar) but Lord Kroak seems like a relatively peaceful and chill kind of desiccated frog, in a way that only desiccated frogs can be.
He took me about four days to paint from start to finish, but I really love the way he turned out. I like it when I get to just use as much color–and not just color but rich, saturated color–as possible, and the Seraphon are excellent at that. I also like that he is just so covered with little details ready to be highlighted with a splash of something vibrant.
I was initially worried that he’d be hard to paint, both because he’s semi-floating (so he might be fiddly) and because he’s surrounded by floating rocks/thrones stuff (so it would be hard to reach details with the brush). But I found he didn’t have any problems at all like that. He painted up very nicely and was a joy from beginning to end. (Buy Lord Kroak from Amazon | Buy Lord Kroak from Element Games)
Fafnir Rann and Dominion Zephon
These were impulse purchases. I have never played 30k, so getting Horus Heresy models was kind of an experiment, but I really enjoyed both of these guys.
Fafnir Rann is the first time that I felt I did an adequate job of painting a yellow Space Marine, and I’m really happy overall. If I had him to do over I would use more red in the details, because as it is he’s very yellow and green instead of the Imperial Fists’ more traditional yellow and red. Even so, he’s a great model, and looks imposing on the tabletop with those two big axes. (Buy Fafnir Rann from Amazon | Buy Fafnir Rann from Element Games)
Dominion Zephon looks as good to my eyes, but I really struggled this morning to get a good picture of him (I finished him very early today while all the house was asleep). I’ve always been partial to Blood Angels, and I’ve also been partial to beaky marines, so this guy kind of ticked all the boxes. I’ll be the first to admit that I know absolutely zero about either Fafnir Rann’s or Dominion Zephon’s backstories, but they are a delight to paint. Iron Golems
As my last fantasy model painted this week, I did this Iron Golem (he might have a name, but I don’t have the box next to me). It was kind of fun to paint a model whose almost entire body is covered in metallics. It sounds like a great chance to try some non-metallic metals. HAHA, let me wipe away these tears of helpless laughter. Of course I used true metallic metal for this guy.
The fun thing about this big oaf is that he is covered from head to ankle in armor, but he has bare feet AND if you turn him around, he’s not only got a bare back but a bare butt. My only assumption is that this is a guy who does not turn his back on the enemy often enough that it matters whether he’s wearing pants.

That’s what I painted this week. What did you paint for Hobby Streak?
