I said in my Ovelist post that one of my goals for 2023 was to paint a Kill Team for each one of the Space Marine Legions. Well, I have spent the first two weeks of 2023 working on that goal, and I’ve done the first two (loyalist) Space Marine legions.
The first is the Dark Angels, which I chose to do with the Intercessors with the Dark Angels Upgrade Sprue. I’ve never painted Dark Angels before, but I like painting green, and I like painting dark. I’m really happy with how these guys turned out (mostly). The color scheme worked really well, especially with the basing scheme (which is Martian Ironcrust and weathering powder, plus a few bits of barbed wire).
The only thing that I don’t like about these Dark Angels is this guy. I have only used green stuff once before (aside from gap filling) and that was to make models for Turnip28. With Turnip28 the models don’t really need to look perfect, and most of it was rolling snakes anyway. With this guy I tried to sculpt a cloak and it turned out SUPER BAD. I don’t regret it, though, because you’ve got to start somewhere. I even decided to keep this SUPER BAD model in the Kill Team because you only live once.
The second Kill Team that I did was the White Scars, as they’re the next in numerical order. I really pondered what kind of Space Marines to make the White Scars because they’re so known for their bikes, and I ultimately landed on Reivers with the upgrade sprue, because: mobility. This presented a little bit of a challenge because the White Scars color scheme is very white with the exception of their chest aquilla and their shoulder pauldrons–but the Reivers don’t have a chest aquilla, and they only have one regular shoulder pauldron.
I tried something different with them than what I would have in the past: instead of basecoating them white and then using Apothecary White as a Contrast paint, I used the new Soulblight Grey shade paint. It gives a little bit darker line in the recesses, which I think works very well, but it does darken down the entire model a little more, so you need to re-whiten the rest of the armor.
My last part of this hobby streak is a different section of my Ovelist: I’ve been meaning to get into the Batman Miniatures Game. I had ordered the newest Batman Miniatures Starters Set a while ago, but it takes a long time for it to get here from Spain. And, honestly, I’m a LITTLE BIT FRUSTRATED WITH SPAIN. In addition to the Starter Set I ordered the Bird of Prey set, and after I had opened the box and put the models together (so I can’t really return it) I cracked open the cards–and the cards are all in Spanish! They sent the wrong set. So, I’m going to see if I can get Knight Models’ customer service to replace them. We’ll see.
