It’s been a while since I’ve posted a #hobbystreak roundup, but I’ve still been painting every day. I have been in a bit of a hobby funk lately, where I can’t quite tell what it is I want to be working on. I had high hopes for one game, was disappointed, and then had low hopes for another and loved it. Oh, and I painted an ork.
Day One: Batman
I have been so excited to get my hands on the Batman Miniatures Game. I have heard a lot of good things about it, particularly from Discourse Miniatures, and I’ve had good luck with Knight Models in the past, so this seemed like a no-brainer. The models really look incredibly on the website, and there are so many different Batmans and they’re all unique and cool. This is the one that came with the set and I like him a lot even though I don’t understand the physics of what’s going on with his cape.
He was a very simple paint job. I sprayed him black and then gave him a purple zenithal, and then it was just a matter of picking out his face and chest emblem, and finishing the base.
What I will say is that he was a nightmare to put together. All resin, so I had to use superglue, and no instructions on how he was supposed to go together. Plus he’s true scale, meaning everything is thin and fragile, and it’s very hard to make a joint with superglue that you don’t have to then file down.
Day Two: Deadshot
I was getting frustrated with Batman Miniatures Game today. I tried to paint Harley Quinn and she is so thin and reedy that the handle of her giant mallet broke and I was PISSED OFF. She was the coolest model in the box, and that thing is far too spindly to pin and any superglue job is going to look really bad. So. I’m upset about that.
Deadshot: meh. This was not my best effort, and I didn’t bother finishing him. I’ll get to him eventually. I was just too upset with Batman Miniatures to want to.
(I should point out that this game is not available in the US and you have to order direct from Knight Models in Spain, and it was expensive, and I’m much less than happy.)
Day Three through Day Five: Ghazghkull Thraka
I had no reason to paint a big ork other than the fact that I had him on my pile of shame and I was so tired of the tiny little parts of Batman that I wanted something big and chonky. I have a problem painting orks. I’m just not good at the aesthetic. And he’s such a centerpiece that he deserves to look really good. But this is what I turned out, and it’ll have to do.
Day Six: Dakkajets
Aeronautica Imperialis is the game that I was not expecting to like but ended up loving. And the Dakkajets, despite being orky and therefore not my style, turned out surprisingly well. I think I like working with small miniatures (meaning: small scale, not spindly) because most of the work is done with washes and drybrushing. Really happy with these guys.
Day Seven: Marauder Bombers
Another set of planes that I really really enjoyed. I was getting into Aeronautica Imperialis a lot by this point, watching a lot of battle reports to get a feel for the game, and falling more in love with it. These were pretty simple: painted grey plastic to be grey, and then gave it a Nuln Oil wash and a light grey drybrush. A few blue highlights and they were done.
Day Eight: Fighta Bommers
These admittedly got a little out of control. I didn’t want to copy the Dakkajets entirely, so I tried them in yellow (which I liked) and then decided to give them a paint job like “what would these look like if you gave some orks a bucket of paint?” It is rough, which I wanted, but looks more sloppy than intentional. Still, I’m happy with them.
Day Nine: Thunderbolt Fighters
I went for a blue gray, kind of like US Navy planes, and then I found at the bottom of the box that there were these decals and I couldn’t NOT use them.
Anyway, that’s what I’ve been painting for hobby streak lately. Next week I’ll get to Hobby Streak Day 365, a full year of it. Pretty proud of that.
