I have literally no game in which I can use these Wargames Atlantic Landsknecht Ogres, but the minute I saw them a couple of months ago, when they were on pre-order, I knew I had to buy them.
Landsknecht is an era that I’m really unfamiliar with, but it has had a big influence on so much of wargaming, especially Warhammer Fantasy and Cities of Sigmar. And, of course, you can buy entire Landsknecht armies that are straight from that period.
(Landsknecht were pikemen and foot soldiers who served the Holy Roman Empire between the 1400s and 1600s, and they looked hilarious.)
But these Wargames Atlantic Landsknecht Ogres are a delight in every way.
They come in a box marked “Classic Fantasy” and they can indeed be built and painted to be classic fantasy, with plenty of halberds and arqubuses and swords and clubs. In fact, that is one of the very best parts of this kit: there is SO much variety in what you can kit these Ogres out with. I built all nine Ogres and I have enough equipment and weapons left for probably fifteen more, which will go nicely into my bits box.
But the neat thing about the Wargames Atlantic Landsknecht Ogres is that they can also be built to fit in with Wargames Atlantic’s Death Fields line, which means they can have machine guns, shotguns, and military helmets. (In the lore of the Death Fields, these Ogres are known as The Vain.)
But seeing as how I didn’t have a game in mind for them, and that I bought them just because the kit was so visually delightful, I did a little bit of everything. Some had berets and shotguns, some had halberds, one had a Renaissance pistol but also a grenade, and one had a sword and a helmet that looked like belonged on General Patton.
I have bought stuff from the Death Fields line before. Wargames Atlantic has a great track record of building stuff that makes good proxies for Warhammer. My first purchase from them was the Einherjar, probably two years ago when I was trying to get my Squat fix. But I got Les Grognards as well (which, it seems, are hard to find these days.) Most recently I got their Bulldogs which are excellent proxies (or good bits to raid) for the Imperial Guard.
(For that matter, I got their World War I Germans to be stand-ins for Death Korps of Krieg before Games Workshop started making plastics.)
And I’ll be honest: I painted these Wargames Atlantic Landsknecht Ogres up in two days. I just had so much fun with them that I didn’t want to pause, and I’m happy with the results. I need to clean up the bases that are a little scuffed, but other than that I love them.
Now, what to do with them.
